Just over one week ago, the Ethereum Node operator community experienced another significant milestone with the Atlas update from Rocketpool. Following the successful Shapella Upgrade, Atlas aimed to add value to the Ethereum LST community by implementing several key improvements.

Atlas Update by Rocketpool

For rETH holders and Node Operators, the Atlas update meant:

  • Increased protocol capacity (approximately +300%)
  • Solo validator to Minipool conversion without the need to exit
  • Increased rewards for each minipool
  • Lower barriers to entry for becoming a node operator

The Atlas update introduced the possibility to create minipools with 8 ETH and 16 ETH, allowing for lower capital requirements to run your own validator and greater returns for both node operators and rETH stakers. This change is expected to attract more participation in the ecosystem, potentially making it more robust and decentralized.

Another notable enhancement is the seamless conversion of a validator into a Rocket Pool minipool, made possible by the Shapella upgrade allowing validators to change their withdrawal credentials. RPL trading volumes suggest that solo validators appreciate this smooth transition.

All these features aim to increase the supply of rETH, Rocketpool’s LST, and potentially boost its adoption in DeFi. The community believes this can create a snowball effect driving further growth for the protocol.

Other optimizations in the Atlas update include:

  • Automatic rewards distributions
  • Gas optimization for minipool creation

These enhancements make the staking experience smoother and more efficient for everyone involved.

Creating an 8 ETH minipool requires staking a minimum of 2.4 ETH worth of RPL and a maximum of 12 ETH worth of RPL. This change encourages more participation in the Rocketpool ecosystem, contributing to its decentralization and robustness.

In summary, the Atlas update has brought significant value to Rocketpool and the Ethereum LST community by increasing protocol capacity, lowering entry barriers, and providing better rewards. As the update’s impact unfolds, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the future of Ethereum staking and the broader DeFi ecosystem.
